IAHMP's First Annual Conference was held on August 18-20, 1996 at the Fontainebleau Hilton Hotel in Miami Beach, Florida with the support of Hilton Hotels and American Airlines. In 1997 the conference was held at the Airport Hilton Hotel in San Antonio, Texas. A few facts on the Hispanic Consumer Market in the United States:
Hispanics have an estimated consumer purchasing power projected to exceed $1 trillion by 2010.
The official U.S. Hispanic population is 46.5M making the U.S. home to the world's second-largest Latino population, surpassing Spain and Colombia and trailing only Mexico whose population is 108.7M. And the Hispanic population is larger than the entire population of Canada (33.4M).
People of Hispanic or Latino heritage have lived continuously in the territory of the present-day United States since the 1565 founding of St. Augustine, Florida by the Spanish . Hispanics have also lived continuously in the Southwest since near the end of the 16th century, with settlements in New Mexico that began in 1598.
According to the US Census 40% of all Hispanics in the United States are foreign-born and 60% of Hispanics are native born US citizens.
In 2000, the five states with the largest Hispanic populations, including both native and foreign born, were California (11 million), Texas, (6.7 million), New York (2.9 million), Florida (2.7 million), and Illinois (1.5 million). These same five states also had the largest Hispanic populations in 1990.
